How much tax do I have to pay on a succession?
Last update: 10/3/2012
Inheritance tax is applied in a uniform manner in Germany. Its amount depends on the value of the assets inherited as well as the degree of kinship. Spouses, registered same-sex partners, children and grandchildren are entitled to substantial allowances. Other people, such as de facto co-habiting partners are entitled to an allowance of only 20 000 euros. Tax rates vary between 7 and 50%.
Detailed information
How much is the inheritance tax?
The amount of the inheritance tax depends on the value of the estate inherited and the tax class that applies to the respective family ties. First of all, the tax allowance applicable to the heir concerned needs to be ascertained (see point 4 of the website). If the value exceeds this amount, the inheritance is subject to a progressive taxation at the tax rates given in point 5.
Can the inheritance be subject to taxation in two or more different States ? Are there double taxation agreements?
You will find a list of the double taxation treaties on www.finanzamt.de.
